Miami, Florida

The Banyan Tree is an Indian Tree of the fig genus, the Ficus Indica, remarkable for its vast rooting branches.  It has ovate leaves, and produces figs about the size of a cherry.  A species of birdlime and abundance of gum-lac are obtained form its juices, and the bark is used by the Hundus as a tonic.  The horizontal branches send down shoots which take root when they reach the ground and enlarge into trunks, which in their turn send out branches, the tree in this manner covering a prodigious extent of ground, and enduring for the ages.
