Kentucky

"My Old Kentucky Home," state shrine near Bardstown, Kentucky was originally the home of John Rowan, noted Kentucky orator and statesman.  It was here that Stephen Collins Foster is reputed to have written the now immortal melody "My Old Kentucky Home."

Tallahassee, Florida


In 1816 Richard Keith Call, then a young officer under Andrew Jackson in Tennessee, wanted to come to Florida with Jackson to conquer the Seminole Indians.  In 1825, with brick made by slaves, General Call built this home for his wife for protection from the Seminoles.  Many writers made this charming place the scene of their books such as "The Home of the Tallahassee Girl" by Maurice Thompson and "Queenie Heatherton" by Mary J. Holmes.

This is the beautiful stone building which contains the Post Office and the Government Court House at Tallahassee.

Kapok Tree Inn - Fort Lauderdale, Florida

The Garden Room, lined with Honduras fern wood, features a beamed ceiling.  A highlight of the room is the fountain, formed on the premises with authentic sea shells.

The Sunflower Room, largest of the dining rooms, seats 500.  Plastic domes in the ceiling let in the outside and serve as planters for various tropical vegitation.

The Chandelier Room - French wall panels with candlelights from Italy complement the magnificent chandelier and had painted dome.  Supported by Corinthian columns, this room is reminiscent of a European palace.

The Bird Room, flanked with artistic panels of exotic birds, is patterned after European aviaries.  A giant schefflera reaches for the latticed ceiling, destined support a canopy of vines.

The White House - Washington DC

The first public building to be begun in Washington when its cornerstone was laid on October 13, 1792.  All Presidents except George Washington, have lived here.  The mansion was partially destroyed by the British in 1814, but was rebuilt during the two decated following, adding the north and south porticos.  During the period 1948-1952 it was completely renovated and restored at at cost of almost six million dollars.  Open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

The White House has bee the home of the Presidents from the time of John Adams to the present.  Washington selected the site, laid the cornerstone in 1792,  and with his wife, Marth, inspected the finished building in 1799.  The building is of Virginia freestone.  After the house had been fired by British Troops in 1814 and only the walls were left standing, the restored exterior was painted white to obliterate the marks of the fire.

Laurel Falls – Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  The Laurel Falls hike is the most popular hike in the Smokies.  The easy paved trail starts at the Fightin’ Creek Gap parking area and the round trip distance is about two and a half miles.

Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, overlooking the Nations Capital from Arlington National Cemetery.  In the background is the Custis Lee Mansion, home of General Robert E. Lee.  The eternal flame, lighted during the burial service, is located in front of the Presidential Seal.

Located near the Custis Lee Mansion and overlooking the Nation’s Capital, is the grave site of John F. Kennedy 35th President of the United States.  Here burns the eternal flame which was lighted during burial services.  Two of the Kennedy children are also buried here.

Marietta, Ohio

The Betsey Mills Club – Marietta, Ohio.  This outstanding Community Center and club for girls, was established when the house at the corner of Fourth and Putnam was given by Mr. and Mrs. Mills in 1916.  This was the birthplace of Mrs. Mills and also of her nephew, Vice President Charles G. Dawes.  In 1927, Mr. Mills built the present beautiful group-building which serves as a memorial to his wife, Betsey Gates Mills.

“The Conus” is the name given the prehistoric mound in Mound Cemetery, by early settlers. 30 ft. high and 375 ft. in circumference, it is considered the most perfect specimen left by the Mound Builders. Buried nearby are many Revolutionary War officers and hundreds of other men and women who gave strength and character to early Marietta.

Directly in front of the Crater which can be seen in the background, was erected to the memory of Confederate General Wm. Mahone and his gallant brigade. His valor and strategy prevented the Union forces from blasting a hole under Confederate lines and capturing Petersburg on July 30, 1864.

 
Once a golf club, then the Superintendent’s residence, this building now houses the Park’s museum, assembly room, and administrative offices.  It is located near the Crater, scene of an ingenious attempt to blast a hole under the Confederate line and so to capture Petersburg.

The Florida Keys

One of the most famous bridges, linking the mainland to Key West, the beautiful Bahia Honda with its picnic area, as seen from the air.

The Highway at Bahia Honda is over 70 feet above the open sea.  From this point you are presented with a panoramic view of the Keys, the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, which is of unparalleled beauty.

This bridge is one of the connecting links in that modern engineering marvel the Overseas Highway, which joins Key West to the mainland.

Miami’s Rare Bird Farm is located in Kendall, just below South Miami on U.S. #1.  Take your camera for there are literally hundreds of feathered creatures in a setting of landscaped gardens, pools and fruit groves.  Flamingos will eat from your hand!  Parrots will pose on your shoulder, Ostriches 10 feet tall!  Monkeys on their private island!  Pet Deer, Bear, Peacocks etc. etc.

Key West belles in old Key West dress look at the Presidential Gates of the U.S. Naval Station.  These gates are open only when a president or other well known dignitary comes to visit Key West Naval Station.  Nineteen presidents have visited Key West including Grant, Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy.  Truman's famous Little White House is only two blocks through the gates and officers quarters line both sides of the driveway.

Built 1743, consisting of two square pillars of coquina rock, 20 feet in height, 10 feet thick; walls are 30 feet in length and 10 feet thick, space between pillars is 12 feet and were protected with heavy iron bound gates, and the approach was by way of a draw-bridge over the moat or ditch.
