Dining Room - "The Breakers"

Rising two full stories, this magnificent dining room far surpasses in size and lavish decoration those in other Newport mansions.  Its columns of red alabaster with bronze corinthian capitols support an elaborate succession of guilded cornices, mouldings and garlands with life-sized figures in the ceiling arches.  The huge crystal chandeliers were both piped for gas and wired for electricity.  "The Breakers", is now owned by the Preservation Society of Newport and open to visitors May 1 to October 31.

The Grand Salon or Music Room, designed and constructed in France, shipped to this country in huge packing cases and installed by French cabinet makers, used for recitals and dancing.  "The Breakers", built for Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1895, is open to visitors April through October by the Preservation Society (Admission charge).

This Louis XVI bedroom was Mrs. Vanderbilt's, and was later occupied by her daughter, Countess Laszlo Szechenyi.  "The Breakers", built for Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1895, is open to visitors April through October by the Preservation Society (Admission charge).

 

Great Hall

The Great Hall rises over forty-five feet through two full floors.  The grand staircase divides at the landing and rises in a graceful sweep to the upper level.  "The Breakers", built for Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1895, is open to visitors April through October by the Preservation Society (Admission charge).
