Parrot Jungle

Florida Parrots are free to fly in the beautiful "Parrot Jungle" near Miami, outstanding attraction of Florida.  The colorful birds there are extremely friendly and will pose for pictures not only on trees but also on the shoulders and heads of the many visitors.

Florida Flamingos.  These exotic and otherwise very shy birds can be seen really close up and in natural settings in Florida's outstanding attraction, the "Parrot Jungle" near Miami, where this picture was taken.

The colorful flamingos are a symbol for Florida:  They were in great abundance when the Spaniards landed here in the 16th century.  Sitting in the swamps in big clusters, the discoverers mistook them for flower bushes and called the new land "Florida" Island of Flowers.  This picture shows a close-up of two beautiful Flamingos in the Parrot Jungle, near Miami, famous Florida attraction.

Parrot Jungle

Macaws at Miami's famous Parrot Jungle have been trained to pose on visitors' arms and shoulders for souvenir photographs. "Bunny" and "Willy" can't quite figure out why the children are straining their faces so much. Maybe the birds haven't weighted themselves lately.


"Topsy" and "Pinky", Leadbeater's cockatoos, have been imported from Australia and now make their home at Miami's famous Parrot Jungle.  Their feathers are snowy white and soft as down.  Their beautiful crests are usually raised when the birds are excited or angry.

The Friendly Parrots in Florida's famous Parrot Jungle sit and pose on the shoulders and arms of visitors. They are free to fly in and out of Parrot Jungle.

Parrot Jungle

These beautiful Purple Capped Lories are native of New Guinea, but now make their home at Miami's famous Parrot Jungle.  Their beaks are soft and therefore diet on mostly fruit, vegetables, and flower nectar.

Five o'clock at Miami's famous Parrot Jungle means only one thing tot he birds - supper.  They enjoy an assortment of seeds and nuts, and a fruit salad consisting of bananas, apples, and grapes.  The Parrot Jungle is one of Florida's outstanding sightseeing attractions.

Parrot Jungle

Over 100 beautiful flamingos parade on the banks of the Flamingo Lake at Miami's famous Parrot Jungle.  Photographers and visitors have an exceptional view of these delicate birds from a coral rock pavillion seen here in the background.

At least once an hour the macaws and cockatoos congregate in the "Parrot Bowl" at Miami's famous Parrot Jungle.  The trainer is having "Butch", an Australian cockatoo, show off his crest and wings.

High in the sky over Miami's famous Parrot Jungle.  Over 100 of these beautiful macaws are free to fly as they wish during the day but are trained to come home to roost indoors at night.  All of them are named and each pair has its own cage with their names on it that they occupy every night.

In the wall, or cliff-forming part, of the Badlands are fossil species not found in the lower layers.  these are, to the left, the peculiar, horned Protoceras, and, to the right, the short-headed oreodont, Leptauchenia.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

The act creating the Gettysburg National Park provided for a memorial in granite and bronze of Lincoln's address at the dedication of the Soldier's National Cemetery at Gettysburg, November 19th, 1863, and the Lincoln Speech Memorial, located in the National Cemetery, near the spot wehre the address was delivered, is the result.  It is a speech memorial and not intended as a Lincoln Memorial.

Seventeen acres of land were purchased by the eighteen states of the north soon after the battle of Gettysburg and presented to the National Government on condition that it be forever preserved and maintained as a national cemetery.  More than 3600 Union Soldiers, including 1600 unknown, are buried here.  The cemetery was dedicated by President Lincoln, November 19th, 1863, at which time he delivered his famous "Gettysburg Address".

As Commander of the Army of the Potomac, General meade was in charge of the Union Army at Gettysburg.  This memorial, erected by his home state of Pennsylvania, occupies the positon taken by his men who repulsed the great charge of Pickett and his Virginia troops.

Sunshine Skyway Bridge

Not nearly as beautiful as the current Sunshine Skyway Bridge which opened in 1987.

Sunshine Skyway, spectacular bridge built at a cost of $22,000,000, is the fulfillment of a longtime dream of West Coast residents.  The last link of new U.S. 19, it increases communication between Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota counties and will furnish a vast scenic highway for tourists coming down the Gulf Coast Highway.

View shows part of the span and downgrade of the Sunshine Skyway, spectacular bridge, built at the cost of $22,000,000 linking Manatee County with the city of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Kadoka, South Dakota

One of the most unusual drives in the world is through the awesome Badlands of South Dakota.  This unique drive extends form just west of Kadoka, S.D. some forty miles to Wall, S.D.

These curious little animals may be seen fee in their natural habitat at the Ranch Store.  They live in organized prairie dog towns, where they build their mounds, which are the entrances to their homes.  They eat grass and small plants.

Flamingo Groves Botanic Garden

Avocado - Growing in Flamingo Grovs Botanic Garden, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  this fruit is one of the semi-tropics.  the avocado, unlike most fruits, contains a large amount of vegetable oil and is commonly used as a salad.  It is also used in the manufacture of face creams.

Sausage Tree - Growing in Flamingo Groves Botanic Garden, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.  In parts of Africa this tree is said to be held sacred;  the fruit, when cut and slightly roasted is said to be used as outward applications in certain skin diseases.  This drug is known to the trade as chysorobin.  the fruit which is from 18 to 24 inches long and from 8 to 12 inches around, hangs on stems from 3 to 6 feet long and resembles huge sausages.

Cluster Fig - Growing in Flamingo Groves Botanic Garden, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  this large tree originated in India.  The red fruits are edible and cluster on leafless scaly branches.

This statue of Major General Slocum is located on Steven's Knoll near Culps Hill.  Much of teh second days battle centered around the site of this memorial.

This imposing memorial erected by the State of Pennsylvania is one of the most beautiful on the field and is a fitting tribute to her 35,000 enlisted officers and men who participated in this great conflict.  All of these names are recorded on the bronze tablets placed around the parapet and on the inner walls of the arches.

The James Melton Autorama

The Civil War scene in the 3-D historic America the Beautiful mural room at the James Melton Autorama, located 8 miles south of Palm Beach on US 1.  the Cavalry charge is one of hundreds of brilliantly portrayed scenes the artist, Bernard Preston Thomas, has chosen to tell the story of the growth of our country.
