Shell Game

Sea Stars, commonly called Starfish, are found on various sea coasts.  There are many varieties.  This one is the most common.  Since they are so destructive to oysters, enormous quantities of them are destroyed by fishermen.

It was not too long ago that shells were literally the treasure of the sea.  Prehistoric men placed a high value on them and used them in bartering for goods.

Most shells have Latin or Greek names.  They also are given what we call "common names" because of the objects they resemble.

It was not too long ago that shells were literally the treasure of the sea.  Throughout the ages, man has placed a high value on them, and has used them in bartering for goods.  This beautiful collection of shells, coral and other treasure, is an example of a few of the many varieties found along our tidal coastline.

The study of shells is a very fascinating hobby.  They have been collected from the beaches of the world since the dawn of history.

You still see the Scallop Shell in many places and used for many things.  As you travel the highways you see the scallop shell emblem displayed in front of Gasoline stations, the trade mark of a Major Oil Company.  In jewelry stores you see the design in silver saucers, bowls, platters, necklaces, and bracelets.  The Scallop is carved in eighteenth century furniture, "Iron Lace balconies in the South, and corner cupboards in New England."
