Pirates Alley

Near the historic, old waterfront of Key West where pirates once roamed, Pirates Alley has been created in the English-Spanish architectural tradition.  It is at the Conch Tour Train starting point and comprises old fashioned ice cream parlor, cigar factory, bookstore, shell shop, pottery shop and native restaurant.

The Hemingway House - this picturesque home where Ernest Hemingway wrote some of his famous novels, is open to the public.

Conch shell sellers in quaint old Key West, Florida, are at the Southernmost point of land, in the Southernmost city.  These shells abound in waters adjacent to the Island, and figure prominently in the Island's economy, and history.  The City flag is adorned with a conch shell and many of the foods that are typical here combine the flesh of the conch.

Smathers Beach

Named after former Senator George Smathers, this beach was constructed at South Roosevelt Boulevard on the Atlantic Ocean side.  Offshore are beatiful white natural sand bars and many shoals where snorkelers may view tropical fish and shells.  The beach is situated between East Martello and West Martello Tower museums.

New and Old Bahia Honda Bridges

Bahia Honda was named "deep bay" by the early Spaniards.  The old bridge to the right was once a railroad bridge and the new roadbed built over its trestles is not in use now.  The new bridge to the left is now in use.  Huge tarpons, sharks and rays can be seen from these bridges.

In 1937 the Overseas Road and Bridge Commission acquired 40 miles of abandoned railroad viaducts and roadbed.  these have been converted into highway bridges and a magnificent roadway which stretches for miles over the open sea to Key West, the southernmost city in the U.S.

the Green Turtle (Chelonia mybes) living in the warm water surrounding the Florida Keys, is widely renowned as an article of food and no trip to Florida is complete without eating a delicious green turtle steak.

The Audubon House, Key West, Florida, stands today as it stood in the 1830's, when its windows overlooked a page unique in American history.  Its owner, master pilot John Geiger, played host to naturalist James Audubon, who produced many of his famous bird paintings in the upstairs study.  the house has been completely restored by Miami businessman Mitchell Wolfson, a Key West native, who has filled the historic building with antiques and treasures of the 18th and 19th centuries, including the rare four-volume "elephant folio" by Audubon.

Cape Florida Light, located in the State Park that bears the name, is located on the Southern tip of Key Biscayne, and is Florida's newest State Park.

Passenger Conch Tour Train, Key West, Florida

Operates conducted lecture tours daily on the historic Island City.  The train passes more than 60 points of interest, running from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.  Key West is the nation's southernmost city and the only town in the U.S.A. that has never had a frost in the history of the Weather Bureau.

Presidential Gates at Key West

Key West belles in old Key West dress look at the Presidential Gates of the U.S. Naval Station.  These gates are open only when a president or other well known dignitary comes to visit Key West Naval Station.  Nineteen presidents have visited Key West including Grant, Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy.  Truman's famous Little White House is only two blocks through the gates and officers quarters line both sides of the driveway.
