George Wasington's Tomb
The Tomb of Washington stands immediately at the head of the pathway from the landing at Mt. Vernon. its position, small dimensions and plain form of brick were dictated by Washington at his will. The front part of the Tomb, through which one may look, contains two marble sarcophagi, one containing the remains of George Washington and the other the remains of Martha Washington. Both the sarcophagi are sealed and intended never to be opened.
Mount Vernon, the Home of Washington, is on the Virginia shore of the Potomac, 16 miles south of the Capitol. The second story end window is of the room in which Washington died. The window above is of the attic room occupied by Mrs. Washington after here husband's death and chosen because this window overlooked his tomb.
