The repulse of a British naval attack against this fort in the War of 1812 inspired Francis Scott Key to write the "Star-Spangled Banner," after viewing the bombardment while being held abourd an enemy ship. Had the British been able to move their ships past the fort and land in Baltimore, they could have changed the course of the war.
