The Everglades

American Alligators roam widely through the Everglades wetlands during the summer rainy season and concentrate around drying pools during the winter and spring dry season.  They feed opportunistically on whatever aquatic animals are locally most common, including fish, crayfish, turtles, apple snails, water birds, and small mammals.

Among other things, the Everglades National Park in Florida, is comprised of thousands of tropical islands made up of Mangrove Trees, called the Mother of Islands and found in most tropical and sub-tropical climates the World over.  the Mangrove Tree drops a spherical pedicel that is buoyant and will float in water till  it strikes a shallow place , where it takes root to begin forming an island.

Florida Everglades

The Alligator is a native of the Florida Everglades.  For some time its skin has been fashionably used in the manufacture of bags, shoes, etc, and with this increasing use they had been hunted until they were almost extinct.  To remedy this situation and supply the demand, several thriving Alligator farms are now in operation, where the breeding and care of alligators is the main industry.

Fur and hide trading is the chief source of income of the Seminole Indians in the deep Everglades.  Raccoons, Opossums and Otter are trapped and Alligators and Snakes shot for their hides.  Traders visit the villages periodically and scenes like the one pictured are enacted.

The Seminole Indians still use the primitve dug-out canoes in their contacts with other villages in the vast Everglades area.  The waterway illustrated parallels the Tamiami Trail and offers a striking contrast between old and new methods of transportation.

The Seminoles are the survivors of the Indians who were here before the Europeans came.  They dress in brilliant garments consisting of a long skirt with short waist or jacket, decorated with silver and gold coins.
