Kelleys Island, Ohio

Kelleys Island, Ohio
Ohio’s largest island possesses two famous natural wonders. The best example of glacial grooves, cut into solid limestone by ice about 25,000 years ago, are found here (upper pictures). Inscription Rock, containing 122 pictographs carved around 1625, is considered a fine example of Indian hieroglyphics (lower Picture).

Built in 1866, the winery, now in ruins and located on private property, was a major supplier of local wines until the early 1900’s when it was destroyed by fire.

The Historic Kelley Mansion

Built in 1861-1865 of native limestone by Addison Kelley, an early settler. This 16-room mansion has an exquisite circular staircase which is self-supporting, high-ceilings, hand-carved woodwork, Venetian hand-cut glass skylight and three Italian marble fireplaces.
