Cypress Gardens 1976

Today we step away from the postcards once again for some more vintage pictures of Cypress Gardens.  Today's pictures come from a Summer 1976 visit that we made to Florida for the Bicentennial.

I'm not sure exactly what this was and I don't remember it at all.  The picture is too fuzzy to read the signs but maybe it had some Pacific island culture ties, what with the tikis in front of the fence and all.

Two AMISH Gentlemen in conversation.  The AMISH are a solemn Religious Sect of people who have retained most of their forefathers' original customs, and make their living almost solely by Farming, without the use, or aid of modern conveniences.  They are widely settled in Eastern Penna.

A Boxlike Amish Family Carriage - it is always covered and contains a back seat for the children.  The Amish take great pride in their horses which are among the finest.

Richmond, Virginia

Confederate Museum, Richmond, Virginia

This building, now the Confederate Museum was the White House of the Confederacy from 1861-1865.  Here lived President Jefferson Davis.  Here came the generals to confer, the couriers bearing news of the various battles.  Most fittingly, the women of the South have made this a treasure-house of things Confederate.  In the museum you may now see the uniforms, awards, camp chest and multitudinous relics of Generals Robert E. Lee, Thomas J. ("Stonewall") Jackson, Joseph E Johnston, J.E.B. Stuart and most of the other Confederate heroes.  The student of that phase of our history finds here invaluable historical papers and files.  Make a U-turn and proceed west on Clay to Eleventh.

Virginia State Capitol

Richmond, Virginia

The Virginia State Capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson, after the Maison Caree, in Nimes, France, an ancient Roman Temple.  The central part was completed about 1798, and the wings added in 1905.

St. John's Episcopal Church

Richmond, Virginia

Built in 1741, St. John's Episcopal Church is the oldest in the city, and will remain famous as the place where Patrick Henry gave his challenging oration for "Liberty or Death" to the American Colonists.  Edgar Allan Poe's mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, is buried in this famous cemetery.

Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

The Collection at the Natural History Museum numbers millions of specimens.  All objects of art, curios, research, natural history, plants, geological and mineralogical specimens of the United States are to be found here.  The largest and most valuable groups of animal will be found here also.

Natural History Building, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., containing U.S. National Museum exhibits pertaining to anthropology, geology, and zoology and also the National Collection of Fine Arts.

The Hope Diamond

Perhaps the world's best-known diamond.  Probably part of the "French Blue," brought to France from Indian in 1668, stolen in 1792, and appearing, re-cut to its present state, in 1830.  44 1/2 carats.  Here reproduced actual size.  Exhibited in Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.  Gift of Harry Winston.

Among other things, the Everglades National Park in Florida, is comprised of thousands of tropical islands made up of Mangrove Trees, called the Mother of Islands and found in most tropical and sub-tropical climates the World over.  the Mangrove Tree drops a spherical pedicel that is buoyant and will float in water till  it strikes a shallow place , where it takes root to begin forming an island.
