The William W. Backus Hospital - 326 Washington St., Norwich, Conn., as it looked in 1976 before demolition and replacement of the main building. Built in 1893 as a nonprofit general hospital, it grew to 228 beds. Its school of nursing ran continuously from 1893 to 1972.
